Methodologies for Process Improvement and Transformation
This is a recurring theme when it comes to documenting, analyzing, identifying opportunities for improvement and redesigning business processes.
Business Process Improvement Methodologies
There are several methodologies for this purpose and we could not fail to mention the Information Engineering of James Martin created in the 90s, but powerful when it is necessary to improve the processes and identify the information that they feed and that are produced by these processes. It is precisely from this relationship that the CRUD Matrix (Create, Read, Updade and Delete) is born, which analyzes what actions the processes cause in the information they process. This matrix is extremely useful for creating clusters of information for the implementation of databases with weak coupling with each other and that provide low interaction between databases and consequently significantly improving the performance of databases and applications (systems ) that use these databases. Likewise, it also allows the identification of related candidate processes to be part of an application (system).
Business Process Management – BPM
Later, Business Process Management (BPM) also appears, which is widely used for process improvement and redesign. It is important to note that in the BPM trail, the Business Process Management Language (BPML) emerged, which is a language for the documentation of processes and the Business Process Management Notation (BPMN), a standardized notation for the documentation and simulation of business processes. There are several tools for designing, simulating and executing BPM-based processes on the market, some “open source” and others proprietary.
Tested and Proven Methodology
In our experience of more than 20 years in business process analysis and improvement, we have developed our own methodology inspired by the methodologies mentioned above and massively using process reference models that we have already discussed in another blog on the topic of business processes.
This approach brings short and medium term benefits recognized by our customers.
