Starting from scratch or using best practices to improve business processes?
Many companies use their own culture and knowledge to improve and redesign their business processes, depending on the degree of maturity of the company, it can obtain good results with this practice.
Alternative Methods
Another way to do it is to use reference models for the improvement and redesign of processes. We strongly recommend this approach, as it avoids efforts to create processes that often already exist entirely or in a similar way in the reference models. This practice allows for the reduction of costs, duration and risks in process transformation projects.
Best Practices
There are several reference models, some are generic and apply without distinction to various business sectors, others are specific to some sector or area of interest. As examples we can mention the ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) of itSMF, COBIT (Control Objectives for Information and related Technology) for IT governance maintained by ISACA, Frameworkx composed of models to processes, information, applications, integration and metrics maintained by TM Forum. We can also mention the model applied to various sectors (general) which is the APQC (American Productivity & Quality Center). Automatum uses all these models in its successful consulting projects.
